The Farmer’s Market is the place to be for produce bargains! Our local Farmer’s Market is located less than two miles from our home (Litsa’s). It is open every Tuesday and Saturday during the summer harvest from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.
By chance, my daughter and I arrived at the Farmer’s Market around 12:30 p.m. on your last Saturday visit with nothing in mind to buy!?! We always do a walk through to see what everyone is selling and to scope out prices/quantities. We greet the locals and then prepare a mental list of what we want to buy if we don’t have anything in particular on our shopping list. Bargain deals are perfect for freezing and/or juicing!
Last Saturday, we made our way back to the table with a basket full of banana peppers. It was one produce item that I enjoy but don’t typically buy at the grocery store. The banana peppers were worth the $2 per basket but the farmer announced that it was bargain time when we approached his table. Before I could request a basket of peppers, he quoted $10 for all—-3 or 4 baskets of cucumbers, 4 baskets of banana peppers, and a big basket of green tomatoes. All the produce was fresh without bad spots. Thus, I determined that I had enough ‘kitchen’ hours to eat on it all week, freeze some of the peppers or make homemade salsa with them, and juice peppers/cucumbers. The farmer also threw in a bowl full of jalapeno peppers for my salsa!
Another farmer approached my daughter about a bargain on a watermelon! She had her own purse with her and was eager to pay for the produce herself. The farmer gave her a huge, dark green watermelon for $0.50—two quarters but 2.5 quarts of watermelon juice and a bowl full of watermelon to eat!
A sweet deal……
If you have a local Farmer’s Market be sure to visit and support local growers! To stretch your budget, visit during closing hours for the best deals!
