Increase Exercise Performance: Ice Pops

We all want the best results from our exercise attempts. Making little dietary changes can net better exercise results. Late this summer, I (Litsa) came across a little ICE THERAPY column in my Self magazine (August 2015). Jason Kai Wei Lee was noted as saying, “Eating a pop before exercising in the heat can improve results.” I personally had no way of testing this theory besides taking in how I felt after working out.

I love cold, fresh juice immediately after working out and/or frozen fruit smoothies infused with a Juice+ vegan protein. After drinking each (not in the same setting) post workout, I immediately felt refreshed.

In Lee’s notes, he deemed that “runners who drank a slushy before a 10K outperformed those who drank room-temp beverages by an average of 15 seconds because the drink kept them from overheating, letting them push harder—and that ice pops have the same effect.” I, too, can conclude that the cold fresh juice and/or smoothies that I enjoy after my workouts, hydrate me from the inside out immediately (even though I have mine after working out). I often think I could enjoy a few more miles after drinking these self-created iced beverages.

Eat-Pops is a new trend that I came across. I love the story of how these healthy pops were created. Maybe you can try them next summer (and/or during your next cardio workout)—-or make challenge yourself to make your own performance pops (recipes at Self.com/go/pops) that will enhance your workouts.

What cold fresh juices do you enjoy that could help you vamp up your workout?
