Several times over the course of the year, I (Litsa) have walked into Starbucks stores requesting my favorite blonde roast blend. Many times the barista has noted that they do not have it brewed but can do a ‘pour-over’ for me. Usually when I’m stopping in at Starbucks, I have ample time to enjoy my brew so I opt for the ‘fresh’ cup of blonde roast ‘poured-over’!
So what does ‘pour-over coffee’ mean?
Pour-over (aka hand-pour) coffee is a brewing method in which hot water is manually poured over ground coffee beans. This allows the water to steep in the grounds longer than for your regular cup of joe, extracting a fuller, richer taste.
For me personally at Starbucks, I don’t mind the fuller and richer taste when a ‘pour-over’ is my only option. The coffee is also freshly made for me so that’s an added perk.
*Note if you were making a ‘pour-over’ cup of coffee at home, you would want your water to be about 200 degrees. At Starbucks, their water is the perfect temperature from their commercial coffee machines. A single cup pour over brewer can be found for about $5!
If you’re a connoisseur of filter coffee while traveling in Europe (in non-commerical areas), you are probably getting a ‘pour-over’ or you are presented the coffee and cup to do a ‘self pour-over’ at your cafe/tavern table! My husband was always stuck with this task when he traveled with me throughout Greece. The best conversations came out of ‘pour-over’ outings (and each cafe was different)!
Pour-Over coffee, anyone!?!
