Italian Prune Plum

I was shopping at Whole Foods last Friday picking up organic cantaloupe for $1.50 each when I came across this curious little plum. What Mr. M and I had spotted was the Italian Prune Plum which became our Try Something New this week.

The Italian Prune Plum is much smaller than a regular plum. It has a firm light colored flesh on the inside. The nice thing is the pit is cling-free. That means the pit is easily removed- it basically just falls out. I also liked the fact that the prune plum is small- perfect for small children to eat as a snack!

The prune plum is sweet and tart at the same time. My boys liked them but were not overly crazy about them compared to the super sweet cantaloupe we also had! I have heard that prune plums are great to bake with- I just haven’t had time to try it this week.

Have you tried anything new this week?
