When we (Litsa & daughter) are traveling, my little girl loves to hold my iphone to direct our paths. She tries to keep up by repeating what the verbal directions say and/or reading the map itself. Sometimes it is more comical than it is helpful but the grateful memories that it evokes gets me to the right place—living in the moment and relishing in our times together!?!
With a vehicle that is equipped with navigation and an iphone in hand, do we need physical paper maps!?! Yes. They are teaching tools. On our last trip across the loooonng state of Tennessee, we stopped at a rest area for a map of Tennessee only to find that the rest of the state was printed on the back! What a great lesson in and of itself!?! Some countries are not as long as Tennessee is—-and the KEY is full of fun facts for our little ones.
While you are traveling this season, power off and relish the learning that’s traditional but tried and true. Map lessons can begin with stopping in for a map (discuss where paper maps are available—rest areas, gas stations, retail stores, etc.). Use highlighters and/or color coded markers to mark what you are teaching and/or discussing with your child(ren) and don’t forget to listen to their questions. Let the ‘curious’ minds guide your teaching.
Safe travels—-and learning—this season!
