Tips For Keeping The House Cool

Summer Fan

It is starting to heat up! Our air conditioner has been running frequently as the temperatures sore into the 90’s.

If your house has a lot of windows, make sure to close the curtains during the day. The curtains will block the strong sun and help keep your house cooler. This is always a hard one for me since I like a lot of light coming in!

When the weather cools down in the evening, open the curtains and the windows. This works really well if you live in an area without humidity. If it is a humid day, keep the windows shut and rely on the air conditioner (Sorry! No way around that humidity!).

Use your ceiling fans. Make sure the fans are going counter-clockwise. You should feel a cool air blowing if your fans are rotating correctly.

Turn your air conditioner up a degree or two. We keep our air conditioner at 75 degrees. I am sure some of you like it cooler. Find a temperature that you are comfortable with and works for your family.

Keep the doors closed. This is a hard one if you have kids! It seems that the kids are always going in and out. Also, keep the doors closed for rooms you don’t use. The is especially helpful if the room has sunny windows.

What our your tips for keeping the house cool in the summer?

  1. I live in a split level, and I like to leave the basement door open to aide in keeping the house cool. Currently using a baby gate to keep the baby and dogs out of the basement but thinking of adding a screen door.

  2. I bought some fabric and also… thermal fabric and i’m making curtains for the entire house!!!.

    • Good idea Andrea! I bet you are saving a ton of money making the curtains yourself. I bought new thermal curtains for our dining area that gets a lot of sun. They were pricey but they look really nice and block the sun well!

  4. Great tips! I used to use a dark blanket to cover my bedroom window. It worked for two things: keeping the sun out and providing a little more insulation. This gave me two benefits: keeping my bedroom cooler and allowing me to sleep a little longer! (My bedroom window faces the morning sun, and I am NOT a morning person!!) >.<

My parents live in a two story home and the basement is always cooler no matter what time of year. In the summer they set a small round fan at the bottom of the stairs, and it pulls the cool air upstairs.
