Time to Plant a Fall Garden

Peas

It’s time to start planting your fall garden! I plantedĀ  a few seeds last week and I am planting more this weekend. I am planning on peas, lettuce, spinach, kale and swiss chard. These are all things that grow well in colder weather. I will also plant some garlic as it takes about a year to grow.

Spinach

So far I have peas, spinach, lettuce and swiss chard popping up. I actually have kale still producing from this Spring! However, I am going to plant more since the plants are looking a bit tired.

As far as my summer crops, the cucumbers plants have expired. They had a good run with more cucumbers than we could eat! The tomatoes are still producing but we are having to fight the squirrels for them. Green beans have been plentiful too. The bell pepper plants are just starting to produce – a little late since we have had a mild summer. Sadly the melon plants only produced three tiny melons that were lost to too much rain. We truly have had a very wet summer. I think we have only had to water the garden a handful of times since we planted in the spring.

The fall garden is totally weather dependent. There is no telling how soon we will have frost since the weather this year has been completely unusual.

Are you planting a fall garden?
