The goal of Thirsty Thursday is to find good and cheap wines for under $10. Today we are headed down under to Australia for Thirsty Thursday wine tasting!
This week I tried something very different- wine from a carton or Tetra Pak. I have seen the Tetra Paks and boxed wines crop up recently and decided it was time to try it. I picked the Alice White Shiraz in the Tetra Pak.
The packaging states that the Tetra Pak is more environmentally friendly over the traditional glass bottle. Plus it would be a perfect package to bring on a picnic! I also like the fact that it is a smaller amount of wine- 500ml versus the traditional bottle of 750ml. Since my hubby doesn’t drink wine, it is nice to have a smaller size available.
On to the wine!
This wine is on the spicy side. There are a lot of flavors in this Shiraz. The first sip was a bit strong and zippy. After further tasting, I could taste the plum and vanilla. It does have a lingering aftertaste of oak. I did find this wine to be a little bitter- not terrible but not smooth either. Shiraz pairs well with grilled meats and spicy meals.
I could not tell that this wine was poured from a “box”. Alice White Shiraz comes in at a great price of $4.95.
As always, make sure you drink responsibly.
Make sure you check out Kansas City Mamas to view the other Thirsty Thursday posts!
