Empowerment of and investment in girls are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights”

-United Nations Resolution 66/170

October 11th is Day of the Girl which is a youth led movement to encourage empowerment of women. While most girls in the United States have access to education, I found the world statistics startling. Only 30% of girls in the world are enrolled in secondary education. Unfortunately inequality doesn’t stop with education. Did you know that 1 our of every 5 high school girls have been physically or sexually assaulted by a dating partner? That statistic makes my stomach turn. You can read more about these stats on the Day of the Girl website.

A good place to start with learning about the struggles girls face is to watch the movie He Named Me Malala which opened in theaters on Friday. You can find a showing near you at this link.

If you are taking your children to see this movie, there is a free parents guide that is a wonderful resource. Even though my kids are too young to see this movie, I found the guide very helpful for myself. It’s gives background information about Malala and what she faced. A truly amazing young women, determined to make a difference.
