Sharp Shopper Shopping

Discount markets are a great place to save money on groceries without using coupons. You all know how much I love Kroger– but there are some things I can get cheaper at discount markets. However, you do need to pay attention to expiration dates. I am a stickler for expiration dates- I have had food poisoning before and I don’t care to experience it again!

The nearest discount market in my area is Sharp Shopper which is about 50 minutes from my house. Due to gas prices and the distance, I only go every few months. Last weekend we were strawberry picking in that direction so we made a trip. Sharp Shopper had the best prices on snack items- even cheaper than I can get with double coupons.

Some of my best deals:

Quaker Granola Bars (48 ct.), $1.99
Nature Valley Nut Clusters, $0.99
Small Watermelon, $0.99
Ritz Crackerfuls, $0.99
Nature Valley Granola Bars (16 ct.), $1.99
Del Monte Fruit Cups, $0.99
Town House Crackers, $1.39

Tips for Shopping Discount Markets:

  • Pay attention to expiration dates or best buy dates.
  • Know your prices. Some things will be a great deal and some items you can get cheaper with coupons. I found cereal to be “expensive” at Sharp Shopper- I know I can get it cheaper with coupons and sales.
  • Set a limit of how much you want to spend. It is easy to go crazy in these stores with prices like $0.99! Believe me, $0.99 items add up fast.

Do you shop discount markets? What are some of your best deals?

Thanks for your article! I too shop at Sharp Shopper and regularly save lots of money there. Whenever I have to make a trip to a regular grocery store I get sticker shock because I forget just how much I am saving on a regular basis at Sharp Shopper. Concerning the date codes on products, I have never had a problem with the food that I buy there and I’ve always been very pleased with what I purchase. They do have a helpful brochure on the website concerning the date codes: http://www.sharpshopper.net/Documents/Product_Dating.pdf

    • Hi Joan,
Thanks for your comments about the dates! It is just personal preference. I had horrible food poisoning two years ago. From then on I have been very careful about food safety. It is not a very fun experience!
