There is rarely a time that I escape the grocery store without having a mistake on my receipt. Sometimes it’s due to clearance items, a cashier error or just a system error.
Although I try to keep track of prices as the cashier is scanning items, most of the time I don’t catch the error until I am done checking out. Before I leave the store I have gotten into the habit of reviewing my receipt. I can’ tell you how much money I have saved by just simply checking my receipt.
The latest incident occurred at Walmart- which I hardly ever shop at. I was charged 4 times for bananas at the incorrect price and the meat clearance I had picked up rang at the full price. This resulted in being overcharged by nearly $5!What if I had never looked at my receipt?
The Walmart scenario was a lot of money (in my opinion) but sometimes it is just a few cents. I still think it’s important to report the error to customer service no matter how little you were overcharged. To me it’s the principle. I expect to be charged what the sign or label states. As consumers we are at the mercy of the store- don’t let them get away with overcharging.
If you are not checking your receipts now, get into the habit of doing so. I think you will be surprised on how many errors you come across.

Oh I had a bad habit of trusting the cashier, I figured they were right ALL THE TIME. Then when I started couponing…..how things have changed, & you are so right ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS check your receipt(s) before you leave the store. I would of never believed how many times there has been an error found for something. We always get charged the wrong price for Bananas we get the plain ones…..& they charge us every time for ORGANIC bananas usually a 20 cent difference…. it may seem like a small amount but overall it makes a difference to a “COUPONER”. I feel so sorry for the elderly who get lured into the SENIOR DISCOUNT DAY & most of them don’t have a clue about the different sales, they only concentrate on the discount day……that’s how alot of the Grocery Stores make their money. My husband says we can not go into this one particular Grocery without having to go to the SERVICE DESK before we leave the store because of an error during checkout….he says they’re just CROOKS misleading the consumers by having multiple SALES going on at the same time, & all it does is get people confused if you’re NOT AWARE of the hidden gimmicks! Believe me….I have learned the hard way, but I am ALERT & AWARE now & that’s how I want it!
