Strawberries

I love that the Farmer’s Market has picked back up again! There is nothing like fresh produce from local growers. It is not a guarantee that there will be low prices at the Farmer’s Market though. In fact many times I think the produce is a bit more expensive. Some of the produce is organic which of course is much better for you. Also, I find that much of the produce is picked that day so it will probably last longer.

My savings tip for today is to hit the market just before closing. My boys have baseball practice right next to the market in my area. Last week I got there just minutes before closing and I was able to get a discount on strawberries that were just picked that morning. Since they were packing up all of the produce, they started offering deals in order to get rid of it.

Now the bad part about waiting until closing is that some produce was sold out. If you want good variety, go early. If you are looking for a deal, go late!

Have you had luck at your local farmer’s market?

The best deal I get at the Farmer’s Market is to buy the “seconds” they are one or two day old produce, nothing wrong with it, but sold at a fraction of the cost. Last year I bought a basket of peppers, red and green, for. $6. It had over 20 peppers and after cutting of soft spots I lost less than one pepper worth. I also get day old potatoes for $2-3 for a huge bag. Then I cut everything up that day and freeze what I won’t use that night for dinner. Lasts me months

    • Hi Stephanie,
That’s a great tip! I know orchards will also have “seconds”. I have purchased a bushel of peaches on deep discount before since they were ripening too fast. They were fine for me since I was canning peach jam! Have a great night!
