Many of us enjoy various types of salads—lettuce, slaw, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, bell peppers, etc. We all have our own favorites or maybe someone you know makes the best salad!?! What really makes a great salad!?!
If leafy greens make up the base of your salad, you might enjoy topping it with your favorite vegetables and fruit this season as new year’s goals to eat healthier top the lists in January—-but don’t forget that nuts are the perfect salad toppings too! They add flavor, crunch, and much needed fuel for the rest of your new year—new YOU– goals!
I (Litsa) am a fan of many nuts but I especially love these three nuts on my salads:
Pistachios: They boost my salad with their subtle, delicate flavor. In their natural beige skins, with added hints of pepper or spicy pistachios are a great salad topping (just make sure their shells don’t join the mix)!
Pecans: Hearty, buttery-rich pecans are a good source of fiber. Try a handful on your salad with feta, spinach, and strawberries.
Pine nuts: These seeds are harvested from Mediterranean pinecones. They are sweet with pungent, sappy notes—-so of course they are perfect for salads. Add your favorite creamy dressing and/or homemade vinaigrette dressing.
All nuts are perfect for salads. Try your own combinations and don’t be afraid to mix various nuts into your salad. Remember that just a few nuts to top the salad are plenty with the rest of your clean eating grub—they are just a topping for salads!
