Last week we talked about the health benefits of consuming broccoli. So the question is, should we eat raw or cooked broccoli? Well, it depends on who you ask!

Broccoli isĀ  a cruciferous vegetable. Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, cabbage and cauliflower) are known to cause intestinal gas. Yes, that uncomfortable bloated feeling. Raw broccoli causes more intestinal upset because the human body can’t digest raw broccoli. So it seems the simple solution should be to eat cooked broccoli.

However…

A study suggests that eating raw broccoli helps the body produce more of the cancer fighting enzymes. Raw broccoli is high in sulforaphane which stimulates the body to produce more detoxifying enzymes.

So how should you eat your broccoli?

If you can tolerate eating raw broccoli, go for it. However, if you have problems with intestinal gas, steam your broccoli.
