Pros & Cons of Raising Two Puppies Together

Back in December we became the proud parents of TWO puppies! I was very reluctant to jump into parenting two puppies. After all, raising a puppy is like having an infant in the house again. The mid-night wakings, the potty training, the chewing and constant monitoring is very time consuming. If you are considering getting a puppy, here are the pros and cons of getting two puppies at once!

Pros

  • Play partner: Luke and Leia always have each other to play with. In fact they wear each other out from playing so hard.
  • Crate Training is Easier: Since Luke and Leia are in the same crate, they comfort each other. Compared to our previous puppy experience, they have less night time waking since they have each other.
  • Lot’s of Puppy Love: Since we have two boys, there is no fighting over puppy love time! The more puppies, the more puppy love to go around!
  • Companionship: Luke and Leia are like two peas in a pod. They snuggle yet play hard. It is pretty cool to watch them grow knowing they will have life long companionship!

Cons

  • Expensive: Puppies are expensive! Vet bills, medication (flea & tick, heartworm, etc.), food and toys all add up. Having two means double the expense.
  • Bonding with Humans: We read in a puppy training book that you should not get two puppies at once because they will bond with each other and not their human master. We make sure that Luke and Leia have one on one time with each of us everyday. So far, I don’t think they have had a problem with human bonding but it could potentially be an issue if you are not aware.
  • Double Trouble: Of course if one finds trouble, the other is sure to be right behind! Keeping track of two puppies and their chewing habits can be tough.

For us the pros have far outweighed the cons. I am really happy that we decided to get both puppies and raise them together. Besides, you can’t have Luke “Skywalker” without having a “Princess” Leia!
