We have heard it all of our lives—just a pinch! Salt stresses our hearts. It is everywhere. Look for the sodium content in your favorite packaged foods and there it is in numbered milligrams. In my June 2015 issue of Runner’s World it was noted that in, “A 2014 New England Journal of Medicine report that high sodium consumption is responsible for 1.65 million deaths worldwide every year. On average, we’re eating 3,400 milligrams of salt a day, and every governing body says we should be eating less—no more than 2,300 milligrams per day according to the Centers for Disease Control and even less according to the American Heart Association (1,500 milligrams daily).”

Many runners reach for sports drinks to rehydrate but they too are loaded in sodium.

Ketchup for your fries, anyone!?!

Sodium.

Salad dressing—sodium!

Cookies—sodium!?!

And if you’re like my husband (Litsa’s)…salt on your peaches and watermelon!?! More sodium…

Sodium stresses the heart so just a pinch is all we need.

Table salt, Kosher Salt, Sea Salt, Gourmet Salts—-which ever form of sodium is making it into your diet, you must be focused on the daily milligram intake.

I leave it off of salads and out of homemade cookie recipes for starters. I opt for sea salt and/or pink Himalayan salt. Additionally, I choose clean foods that are not processed so that they are not induced with high sodium levels. And no salt on my fruit…….

Sports drinks….I have never been a fan…..

How about you? How do you keep sodium out of your diet?
