It’s Monday. Don’t grumble and complain. Compliment yourself (don’t you just love this idea of free compliments!?!) today.
Our children are listening. They hear us.
What do you want your child to hear you say? What did you instill in their little heads/hearts this morning?
I beam with delight when my little girl pays compliments to others. Sometimes they are trivial, “I like your shoes.” She’s very attuned to visuals. Shoes, purses, sparkly jewels, and more…..but I think that she’s in tune and very wise at age five. She KNOWS that compliments make one feel good. They show interest and LOVE.
When I dropped her off at preschool on the first Friday of preschool she said, “Mrs. Betsy, I love you!” averting her eyes on her teacher—trusting her with caring for her as she bravely tried to walk in like a big girl without tears (tends to suffer from separation anxiety from mom—I call it “only child syndrome” since she’s not only an only child but one who has not been one day without me since birth!).
The compliments continued throughout the weekend. “Thank you for our food,” said Sophia (age 5) to our server as we left the restaurant on Saturday evening. The server just smiled and said, “You’re welcome.” She was taking another table’s order when my child interrupted her with a compliment.
“Mommy, this caramel is yummy! Next time we go to Starbucks, we need to tell them that it’s the best and ask them how they make it so we can make caramel apples with it at home!” Sophia was enjoying an organic apple full of sweetness with a little caramel drizzle—-or maybe a puddle of caramel since she did ask for seconds on the caramel! But what a treasure it is to hear compliments…to give compliments.
Compliments resonate in your heart—-they are a gift, a treasure for you the giver and for the receiver. I enjoyed a pop of color this weekend while out shopping in Memphis. The compliments poured out from family and strangers alike. They put a little more pep in my step and reminded me of a dear friend what is always diligent in paying compliments to my child and me.
Compliments are a gift. Don’t start Monday or any other day without them!
