Shopping ahead is a great way to save money on gifts. However, many times we forget what we bought, who the gift was for or where the gift was stored. A couple of years ago I bought my mom’s Mother’s Day gift in advance. When it came time to give it to her, I could not find it anywhere! I tore the house apart and never found it in time. About a year later, I found the gift in the oddest spot. Since then, I take notes on the gifts I buy.
Tips
- Write down the item and who it is for. I also write down what Holiday it is for – Christmas, Birthday, etc.
- Store the gifts in tote bins. I place the gifts in a large plastic tote and then place it in our attic space. You could also designate a closet if you have enough room. The toes keep little eyes from peaking!
- On your list, write down what storage area the gift is located in.
- Review the list throughout the year and make sure you don’t overbuy.
- If you don’t want to make a list, place a sticky note on the item with the recipients name on it.
I packed away the toys I bought at Target today and started my list. I discovered I have Capt. M and Mr. B’s Easter Basket items, their birthday gifts and a good start on stocking stuffers for next Christmas. I also have Birthday gifts for three out of four of my nephews!
Shopping ahead allows me to buy more for people since I buy items at a deep discount. It also relieves stress when Birthday’s sneak up on me!
