Having health insurance is important. Understanding how your health insurance works when you need to use it is VITAL. After finding yourself in the midst of a hospital stay and/or sickness, you may begin receiving bills and EOBs (Explanation of Benefits). Both of these are summaries for your insurance claims.
I file both Explanation of Benefits and medical bills by date and under the name of the family member that the claim is issued for. It helps me keep track of our medical history and/or accurate bill payments.
I do not pay medical bills before seeing the Explanation of Benefits summary. IF the medical bill and the “What I owe” on the Explanation of Benefits page does not match, I call the billing facility to inquire what/who/why/when/where. I document any notations that are made and venture forth from there.
After a long illness and/or medical stay, you may find yourself overwhelmed with EOBs and medical bills but organization is still key to finalizing the payment of each. You—-and I both——-can only move forward one step at a time. These CIGNA trees are my current medical affairs—-visuals for me to stay organized and motivated to move more medical debt off of my family’s budget.
File. Organize. Pay. Make notations of all payments. Repeat.
One medical bill at a time……
