It’s easy to lose yourself in wires and cords in this era of gadgets: computer desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, ipods, etc. When you need a specific attachment, receipt, warranty note, or such from your new gadget, do you know where to find it? Usually, I can tell you where it is NOT in our home since I work from room to room to maintain the house as organized and uncluttered as possible. However, with the multitude and likeness of the new items we’ve purchased lately, I have had to become more organized in find the cords, boxes, etc. that I need when I need them.
I devised a little system of organization that I’m going to try out in 2012. When I buy something new that has little items I need, I’ve initiated writing the name of the item and date purchased on an address label. I attach the label to a Ziploc bag that houses extra items for item and/or on the box itself. I will place a plastic box/container at the top of our attic stairs with these “New Item” extras to catch all the Ziploc bags of items and I’ll know where to find them.
For Example:
- I bought a small Canon Digital Camera in January 2012 for myself. I placed the box, paperwork, extra camera cords, CD all in a Ziploc Bag labeled: Pocket Digital Canon Purchased Jan. ’12 (on sticker). It’s ready for my container. The receipt is also in the box/Ziploc bag just in case I need it for warranty measures and/or returns to the store.
- We bought my daughter a new car seat. It had an extra strap in the box as well as a booklet about the car seat. I placed those items along with the receipt in the Ziploc bag and labeled it Graco Car Seat Feb. 2012.
You can also use the same container for odds and ends that need a home——-or create a second container for those items. For instance, I have a Nikon lens that needs a new home. Until I can sell it ($200 lens), I’ll label the Ziploc bag and place the lens in the box (noting it as item to sell in my calendar). Additionally, I have a smaller Nikon lens that only works on the manual setting, I can label that Ziploc bag accordingly and place it in my container too. The items that accumulate in our home with new purchases &—old but still good purchases—-will have an organized nesting space until they are needed.
How do you tame these GADGET EXTRAS at your house?
