I did a lot of canning over the summer. I ended up with strawberry jam, blueberry jam, blueberry syrup, peach jam, sliced peaches, peach pepper jelly, applesauce, apple jelly, apple pie filling and banana pepper rings. My pantry is pretty small and we were in desperate need of organizing my canned goods.
At first hubby was going to build some sort of shelf system. Then we came across this antique metal pantry at a local antique store. It was $45 and it was the exact size for the space we had available. Hubby probably could have built something a little cheaper, but it would have taken him a good while to get to that project. Sometimes paying a little more is worth it!
The other thing that I love about this cabinet is the writing on the inside. There are dates and notes in pencil. Hubby was going to paint the cabinet but I insisted we keep the history.
My canned goods fit perfectly in the cabinet too. I love looking in there to see our accomplishments. It’s kind of like my “trophy” cabinet! Plus I am able to see exactly how many jars I have left of a particular item.
Do you shop at antique stores? Sometimes you can find some great treasures!

Beautiful cabinet! Can I put my order in for one just like that – filled?
Hi Bonnie,
I am in love with my cabinet too! If you have never canned before, you should try it. Jam is pretty easy! Have a great day!
I just love your canning cabinet!!!!
I have some apples that were given to me to try to canning.
Can I Please have the directions to your Apple Jelly and Apple pie filling? All I know how to do is: take the apples cook for few minutes and then pressure can them (adding little sugar).
Any tips would be greatly appreicated.
Hi Lora,
The nice thing about apples is you can use a water bath canner- no pressure canner needed. Here is the link to my apple pie filling- http://www.howtohaveitall.net/apple-pie-filling-canning-recipe/
I haven’t blogged about my apple jelly yet but I make it from the apple peels and cores. It is my son’s favorite jelly! This is a basically how I make it though http://www.recipelink.com/mf/20/7379
Hope that helps!
I’m so pleased to see your canning cabinet. I have two very similar cabinets that my parents bought right after WWII when they set up their first home. They have been in our family all my life. I’ve used them for the last 20 years, one as a pantry and the other for my canning (although I think your picture is much prettier than mine ever looked). My mother covered the rust spots with “flower decals” and now that I want to repaint…I’m not sure I can bare to remove the decals, so, I might have to try to seal the decals with a clear rust cover then paint the rest of the cabinet. She was a super “decal” user (contact paper was another favorite that I’m removing from the shelves) and after reading how you kept the inside of your cabinet in tact…I think I’ll save those decals because they make me happy and I can continue her memory with my daughters on into the future. Thanks again for your cabinet.
