Once upon a time, I (Litsa) remember looking up ‘cough syrups for children’—-My husband and I pondered on the effects of it after reading that pineapple juice could indeed help break up mucus and a dry, irritable cough. At the time, my husband even juiced a pineapple by tossing it in our blender—so we had pulp enriched pineapple juice. We didn’t really pay attention to the effects of it as our daughter muddled through her cold/allergies but here we stood mid-December again this year needing cough relief for our 6.5 year old. We couldn’t give her cough syrup since she has bouts of asthma that might be suppressed by a cough syrup.
Besides spoonfuls of local honey, breathing treatments, Nasonex, rest, endless water, cough drops—–the cough was continuous and nonstop even after Benadryl to help her rest.
Two pineapples sat on my counter top.
My juicer was ready.
I chopped and juiced the pineapples. She began sipping the fresh pineapple juice and within 20 minutes, we had a wetter cough developing. AND the coughing that was continuous began to give her mini breaks! Success!
She drank two entire pineapples (slowly sipping on it between resting on the couch all evening). I can honestly say that I feel like the fresh pineapple helped break up the mucus. It was amazing to sit here next to her and hear the breakup of the cough.
Prevent Disease states that, “Pineapples contain bromelain, an enzyme with anti-inflammatory properties. It fights infections and kills bacteria. The juice from fresh pineapples can suppress coughs five times more effectively than cough syrup.”
Give it a try, you might be surprised with the results!
We were pleasant surprised—-and five more fresh pineapples have been juiced to help speed the recovery for one!
