microwave chestnuts

For New Year’s we visited my in-laws (Renae’s) in New York. My father-in-law had purchased chestnuts for us to snack on! I figured we would roast them over a fire (just like the song!), but he informed me the easiest way to cook chestnuts is in the microwave. In a minute or two you can have warm chestnuts ready to eat.

If you have never tried a chestnut, they are nutty and sweet. Litsa previously posted about her experience with chestnuts and how to roast chestnuts.

To cook a chestnut in the microwave, first wash and scour the chestnut to remove dirt and debris.

Then cut an X on the flat surface of the chestnut. You want to cut it deep enough to cut the skin layer inside. This will prevent the chestnut from exploding when heated. Use a serrated knife to help cut through the thick outer shell.

Place the chestnut in a microwave safe plate. Heat for approximately one minute on 100% power. If you have a low watt microwave, you may need up to 2 minutes. For our microwave, one minute was perfect.

Let the chestnut cool slightly and then peel the outer shell and inside skin off. Eat warm.
