Life With Boys: Measuring Time

Length of time is a hard concept for children to understand. My boys are often asking how long a day, week or month is. Over the summer we were on a long road trip and the boys kept asking how much longer. Of course two hours meant nothing to them! So hubby shouted out “It’s four Clifford’s long!”

The boys are big fans of the cartoon Clifford the Big Red Dog. Each episode is 30 minutes long. Once we started measuring time in “Clifford’s” the boys seem to understand.

Just a few days ago we were on the way to a corn maze about 45 minutes from home. Capt. M asked, “Is it going to take 2 or 3 Clifford’s?” We told him less than 2 Clifford’s which satisfied him. Along the way we did not hear “Are we there yet” we heard “Has it been 1 Clifford yet?”.

It still out s a smile on my face hearing the boys ask how many Clifford’s but I am glad that they are able to measure time. If your child is having a hard time understanding time, relate it to a program they watch or an activity they complete.
