Since the flu is prominent in our area currently, I have been the hand washing police. I feel like I am constantly asking “did you wash your hands?”.
Me: “Boys go wash your hands it’s dinner time.”
Capt. M appears at the table in 30 seconds flat.
Me: “Did you wash your hands?”
Capt. M: “Yes mom.”
Me: “Really? You better not be lying to me.”
Capt. M: “I diiiiid!”
Me: “With soap?”
Capt. M: “Well you didn’t say wash with soap!”
Ugh!
So now I have to say “go wash your hands AND make sure you use SOAP”. That just made me think, I wonder if they are using toothpaste when they brush their teeth since I usually say “go brush your teeth” with no mention of toothpaste?!
Children sure keep parents on their toes! The one thing I have discovered is that you have to tell them exactly what you want them to do. Each. and. every. step. It’s a learning curve for the both of us!

Exactly what I am going thru right now with hand washing and brishing teeth. My boys are ages 7 and 9 :)
Hi Bonnie,
Glad I am not alone! I think the personal hygiene care doesn’t kick in until teen years. Keep at it and someday they will understand! Have a good night!
I saw a trick where you put glitter on their hands to represent the germs and have them wash with just water and then water with soap. I haven’t tried it yet but it seems like a good idea!
That is a great idea Lauren! I am going to give it a try this weekend! Thanks!
