Life With Boys: Education

Education.

Our children are in need of a good education and it is hard to come by these days. Things are about to get worse- at least in my county.

I know many of you don’t live in my county or even in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our school system is in a state of emergency over a decision from our Board of Supervisors to cut the school budget by 2.3 million dollars. The school board is now trying to decide what to do- close schools, delay the opening of the new high school, cut sports, cut after school programs or cut employees. It is truly a sad and depressing state.

I have never been into politics. I hate politics in fact. Unfortunately I wasn’t paying attention. The Board of Supervisors thought they were doing what the people wanted by not raising taxes. Of course no one wants to pay taxes, but it s a necessity. Since not enough voices were heard in support of school funding, the budget was cut and it has been cut again- the budget has been cut for several years now.  But I now find myself wanting to stand up for the school and the children. I will be attending the next Board of Supervisors meetings in hopes of changing their minds.

So you might wonder why I am writing this to you! I want to urge all of you to stay on touch with your local politics- even if you don’t like it. There were so many decisions made last week that impact not only our children but the senior citizens in out community as Jaunt services were also cut. Be in touch what is going on in your community so you can make your voice known!

As Capt. M finishes Kindergarten I am fearful of what the next year will bring as far as his education. Will his class size increase? Will he still have to eat lunch at 1 pm (lunch service starts at 10:30 am and takes until 1 pm to get through the whole school)? Will there be class aids to assist teachers? What will the supplies be like? And the list goes on. I know that parents of older children worry that their 4th grader will have to attend school with 7th graders. Or that middle school sports will be cut. And these are just a few of the concerns.

Be informed. Be involved. Be loud. Let your voice be known!

If you do live in Fluvanna County, please consider signing the petition to amend the budget and write a letter to the Board of Supervisors!
