Life With Boys: Chewing Gum

If you would have asked me a day ago, I would have never guessed that I would be writing to you about chewing gum. But then again, life with boys always keeps me on my toes!

So it all started at the kickoff carnival for Vacation Bible School (VBS). My boys had a blast playing carnival games and “winning” candy and gum as prizes. On the way home, the boys asked to have a treat (of course!) and we allowed them to pick on thing. Fast forward an hour and a half to bedtime.

I asked Capt. M (age 5) to brush his teeth as usual. A few minutes later he was sitting with hubby waiting for us to put him to bed. I noticed he was chewing something. It was the gum from the carnival treat bag. I explained that he now needed to brush his teeth again since the sugar bugs have now returned to his teeth and instructed him to throwaway the gum.

Not five minutes later, hubby notices he is chewing something again. It’s the SAME gum! Totally frustrated, we made him brush his teeth for the third time and watched him open the door to the trash to throw the gum away.

I lay down with Capt. M to get him settled into bed and notice something sticky on his shirt. He says, “Hmmm, something sticky on my shirt!”

I look on the underside of his pajama shirt and guess what I see – GUM! You. have. got. to be. kidding. me!

Now I fully expected my sensitive boy to burst into tears. Nope. He calmly says “I guess I won’t be getting gum for a longtime. Probably not until Christmas.”

You’ve got that right son! No gum in our house for a VERY longtime!

Kid’s never cease to amaze me. I have no idea what was going through his brain (or not!). Why was that one little piece of gum so important that he would lie and be deceitful? I’m thinking it’s a good week for him to be attending VBS!!!

This week we will be focusing on being truthful. Anyone have any good children’s book recommendations? And please tell me other children do similar things!
