I was chatting with a friend earlier this week about her current business situation. She is burned out and not enjoying the business anymore. I told her “Life is too short!” In order to not disclose her identity I am going to keep this pretty general.
I have been in her shoes before as I am sure many of you can relate too. My friend had put a lot of work into her business over the years. It became profitable but very time consuming. She is having an internal battle- give it up and maybe regret the decision OR give it up and gain freedom OR keep on the same path not enjoying it.
It is not always easy knowing what direction to take. Here are some suggestions for making difficult decisions:
- Make a list of the pros and cons. Compare the lists- if the costs out way the benefits it is time to give it up.
- Talk with a friend. Sometimes just putting your thoughts into words makes a big difference.
- Take a break. My friend took over a week of from her business to see if her feelings would change. They didn’t which is a pretty sure sign of what the best option is.
- Ask for guidance. If you are religious, pray about your situation.
It is scary making a life changing decision. Being stressed and overwhelmed is not good for anyone. Last year I was very stressed and had minimal sleep. Not only was it bad for my body but everyone around me could sense the stress- even my kids.
I want to encourage people to evaluate themselves. Are you stretching yourself too thin? Volunteering for things you don’t enjoy? It is okay to say no- something that I still struggle with. Strive for balance in your life.
Remember that life is too short. If you are involved in an activity that takes away the joy, it is time for a change. What seems like such a scary choice might lead to bigger and better things. Which leads me to my motto for the year: The road of life is curvy, you never know what’s around the bend!
