Journals: Give the Gift of Writing

writing

In December of 2012, I (Litsa) gave my four year old daughter her first journal to write in daily. I made sure that I set time aside for the two of us to write in it together. The journal entries started on 12.6.12 and have never stopped. She is now 6 and she is constantly writing. She takes my notepads and favorite pens and writes. Little notes stream the backseat of my truck and notes are hidden away in my budget files….littered on my desk and if I ask her if she’s packed what she needs prior to us traveling, she always asks me if I’ve packed her journal.

Days get busy and sometimes we neglect our journals.

But when something or someone puts a smile across our face, we want to write about it.

She wants to write.

“Mommy, I know what we can write in my journal today.”

I let her take the lead when she makes that statement.

And it wasn’t a surprise when her teacher at parent teacher conferences praised her efforts and excitement for wanting to write in her journal.

When I taught, journals were my favorite end of the year keepsake. I didn’t want to let my students go or their journals filled with daily treasures: Words.

Their imaginations. Their illustrations. Words. Sentences.

They were all gathered and collected in their composition books.

Writing is a gift. IF you want to give it to your child(ren) and/or yourself, give journals this season. Make time for writing and let the moments in your life lead your children to being lifelong writers——–and when they read or you read aloud to them, talk about the written word.

Point out phrases. Laugh at words.

Then, write!

Live life.

Then, write again!
