Journaling Tales: Adjectives & Nouns

journalsThe journals are stacked high in our writing spaces in our household! My little girl always wants to write in her journal too——the prompts vary! Sometimes they are spontaneous based on what we are doing (or have done) that day. Other times, I ask her if she wants to write about……or she chooses……and then sometimes we write about what’s stacked high in our house……movies, toys, doll mischief, or puzzles!?!

puzzle wordsThe other day as I was spring cleaning, I found this puzzle that’s been a part of our lives for at least four years. Its pieces were all in tact and it really just needed a new home but as I put my fingers on it, my little girl (Litsa’s) started reading the words, “Pink pig, rough lizard, red apple, etc.” Thus, I knew that it needed to stay just a little while longer. My emergent reader was flying high with reading skills from her kindergarten class——-all the writing, the reading….the skills, they were pouring together into knowledge. So rather than taking away the puzzle, I placed it next to our journals in the kitchen. I selected five pairs and she chose one to write about last night. Using what she was familiar with gave her a journal prompt to pen. She wrote about a shiny fish but tomorrow two pieces that don’t pair together in the puzzle (i.e. checked pig, the checked fish, or shiny scarf) could become the new writing prompt).

writing
Reading to write and writing to read is something we embrace daily. Giving children time to write is as important as reading to them. Anything they are writing promotes awareness of the written language in our world—entice your child(ren) with pen and paper today!
