One way that I (Litsa) save money on produce is to stockup when it is at rock bottom prices! Usually, when I’m first in line to shop at Kroger in the early morning hours, I find produce on sale. It’s tagged “Manager’s Special!”—and the price is always right. Most people shy away from produce stock-up opportunities since produce is perishable. However, most fruit can be frozen easily! A couple of weeks ago, Renae told us about freezing fresh pineapple that she bought for $1. My bag of apples wasn’t that cheap but at $2.49 for a 5lb bag of Gala apples, they came home with me for salads, snacks, smoothies and a ‘discovery’—–frozen apples!

I hate to toss away what my little girl doesn’t eat so I bagged a few of her apple slices that she didn’t eat one evening. I opened the freezer for some fruit on a hot day in late May. The discovery—four slices of Gala apples. Yummy! They were perfect. Moist. Sweet. Cold.

It is really easy to freeze apples—with a little bit of prep. First, core the apples with an apple corer. Next, slice the apples in half.

Peel the apple skins if you wish (we prefer ours peeled).

You may want to flash freeze the apple slices so they don’t stick together. I just toss mine in a Ziploc bag and they are ready for the freezer!

Once the apple chunks are frozen (if you are flash freezing), place them in a freezer bag. Now you have frozen apples for smoothies this summer—or eating by the pool and/or in the car on long drives! Cool, refreshing, & healthy!

Looking forward to trying the frozen Granny Smith apples that I (Litsa) tossed in my batch of frozen apples this week! What about you?

What’s your favorite frozen fruit?
