Dried Spices

I love having fresh herbs in my garden. The smell so good and add a lot of flavor to my recipes. As the seasons start to change, I am beginning to dry my fresh herbs. Once the temperatures drop to freezing, my fresh herbs will be gone.

Last summer I dried basil and dill from my garden. That was the best dried basil I have ever used! It was fragrant and tasted good. This year I am drying basil, dill, sage and rosemary.

It is very easy to dry fresh herbs. Just wash the leaves and then lay them out on a paper towel. I place mine on a cookie sheet. I let them air dry for 3-4 days. You could also use a dehydrator if you have one. Once they are dry, place into glass containers or plastic bags.

If I can’t have fresh herbs, drying my own is the next best thing!

  1. When you say wash the herb leaves, are you talking about using vegetable wash, then rinse then dry… or just rinse the leaves? Thanks for any additional information.

    • Hi Julie,
Since I don’t use any pesticides on my herbs, I just rinse them with water and then let them dry. If you suspect the herbs have pesticides, I would recommend the vegetable wash! Good luck!
