Heartfelt Holiday’s: Corn Hot & Cold Packs

heartfelt holiday

One of our favorite homemade gifts is a microwave corn hot pack. My mom made a small hot pack for each of my boys and they use them all winter long. We place the hot pack in the microwave for a minute or two right before bedtime. The boys love snuggling up with it at night! Plus we have two smaller packs that we keep in the freezer for cold packs. They are so handy when the boys get hurt since they are not as cold as ice and they mold to their body parts.

Supplies Needed

Sewing Machine
Cotton Fabric
Whole Feed Corn (Deer Corn) or Cracked Corn

Corn Hot Packs

Making corn packs is very simple. You don’t need a pattern- just cut two pieces of cotton fabric to the desired size. Sew three sides of the fabric together to make a bag. Fill the bag about 3/4 full with corn. Sew the bag closed. Place the newly made hot pack in the microwave for two minutes on a hand towel to make sure the corn is dry. If there is moisture on the towel, allow the hot pack to cool for a couple of hours and then heat again for two minutes. This process will also kill any spores or critters that are hiding in the corn.

For cold packs we use cracked corn since it is a smaller pack. Just place the pack in the freezer and pull it out when you need it!

You will find the whole feed corn or deer corn in the hunting section or at a feed store. Look for extra clean feed corn too. You want just the corn in the bags and not other parts of the corn cob.

Making corn packs are inexpensive and a great gift that will last years. My corn hot pack is at least 4 years old and still works wonders on my sore back.

Do you use a corn hot or cold pack now?
