Are you turning the tables and vowing to eat healthy? Well, there are ‘apps’ to help you with your journey of healthy eating! Surprised!?! I’m not. However, picking the apps that will help you is half the challenge of getting started. Prevention magazine narrowed down three apps for healthy eating in their May 2013 issue. “Whether it’s avoiding pesticides, ridding your pantry of GMOs, or finding a restaurant that caters to your gluten intolerance, there’s an app for that.”

Pick the best produce with Harvest. This app, Harvest, features a database of produce—from acorn squash to zucchini—offering tips on how to tell if something is ripe, at its peak season, or typically high in pesticide residue. ($2; iPhone)

Demystify packaged foods with Fooducate. Use the built-in-bar-code scanner to see the health rating, from A to D, of almost any food. Scroll down to find out if the food is full of important nutrients or contains sketchy additives like high fructose corn syrup, MSG, or trans fats. (free; Android & iPhone)

Eat healthy anywhere with HealthyOut. Enter your dietary restrictions or even a specific diet (think South Beach, Paleo, or gluten free) and this app uses your location to suggest specific dishes at nearby restaurants. It will even advise you on making special requests, such as holding the wonton strips on your Asian salad so that it’s gluten free. (free, iphone).

Opt for one or more of these apps for healthy eating to help you get started or encourage you. When you invest time in yourself, you’ll reap the harvest whether the efforts are traditional and/or you select apps to assist you!
