The best time to stockup on canned good is in the winter. This is due to the fact that canned goods are often at their lowest prices in the Fall and Winter months. Canned tomatoes are a great item to stockpile since they can be used in a variety of recipes. There are manned different types of canned tomatoes. I thought it would be helpful to explain the different types of canned tomatoes and their best uses.
Whole Tomatoes – The highest quality of canned tomatoes is generally whole tomatoes. Manufacturers reserve the ripest and prettiest tomatoes for canning whole. Whole tomatoes can be diced to add to stews and chili.
Diced Tomatoes – A very versatile canned tomato, diced tomatoes are tomato chunks in tomato juice. Diced tomatoes are either canned plain or with a variety of spices.
Tomato Sauce – Canned tomato sauce is not spaghetti sauce. It is made from pureed tomatoes. Tomato sauce is usually the base to pasta sauces and casseroles.
Tomato Paste – A very thick paste that is made from long-cooked tomatoes. This is usually used as a thickening agent and to add a rich flavor.
Stewed Tomatoes – Tomatoes that are cooked with seasoning and sugar added. Usually onions, celery and bell peppers are added to stewed tomatoes. Great in Italian dishes, chili and stews.
Fire-Roasted Tomatoes – These tomatoes are charred to add smokey flavor to dishes.
Crushed Tomatoes – These are a mixture of diced and pureed tomatoes. Crushed tomatoes are great in pasta dishes.
Make sure you read the ingredient list on when buying canned tomatoes. Some brands will add extra ingredients that you might not want. Overall, I find it very helpful to have canned tomatoes on hand.
