Getting Kids to Take Medicine

Some kids like medicine and some hate it. I happen to have one of each- Capt. M (age 4) hates it and Mr. B (almost 3) love it.

We have struggled with getting Capt. M to take medication since he was a baby. He does not like any type of liquid medication. He has a long history of ear infections and unfortunately this has resulted in a lot of medication battles.

With allergy season in full swing, Capt. M ended up with an ear infection last week. We thought we had this medication thing figured out- he will take chew-able antibiotics. Unfortunately, none of the local pharmacies had it in stock! Knowing full well that the liquid would be a disaster, we decided to try the swallow-able pill.

No such luck with that either!

The pharmacist told us to open the caplet and mix it in food or a drink if he wouldn’t swallow it. The one very creative food hubby came up with was cinnamon sugar toast. Hubby spreads the butter on, sprinkles on the antibiotic and finally sugar and cinnamon on top. After two mornings of this “special toast” Capt. M says “Something isn’t right. I don’t know, it’s just not right!” But, he ate it!

Time will tell how long we can keep up with the “special toast” charade!

How do you get your child to take their medication?

  1. If it works, go with it! Applesauce is a good base for mixing in capsule/crushed pill medication. Kool-Aid is good for liquid meds as are snowballs (that’s what we call them in the New Orleans area, maybe you call them sno-cones or ices).

“The Medicine Song” by the wonderful Imagination Movers really helped us before our little bug could swallow pills. You should be able to find it on iTunes.

    • Thanks Gayle! We have moved up to “special yogurt” today. Unfortunately he won’t eat applesauce- loves apples but won’t touch the applesauce! I will look for the “The Medicine Song”. Have a good night!
