Our weather has finally stabilized and it looks like the threat of frost is no longer a concern. This weekend we spent a lot of time working in the vegetable garden planting and pulling weeds.
I went to a family owned garden center in our area and picked up most of my plants. I did start several tomato plants and eggplant from seed. However, the rest I bought at a great price of $2 per 6 pack.
I ended spending about $22 and bought:
(1) 6-pk. Zucchini
(1) 6-pk. Crook Neck Squash
(1) 6-pk. Cucumbers
(1) 6-pk. Spinach
(2) 6-pk. Yellow & Green Bell Peppers
(2) 6-pk. Tomatoes (Roma & Celebrity)
(1) 4-in. Sweet Banana Pepper
(1) 4-in. Dill
(1) 4-in. Sage
It doesn’t look like much now but it is fun to look back at these pictures as the weeks progress. (And ignore the weeds around the boxes- I did pull those after the picture!)
Several weeks ago I planted onions, lettuce, carrots, sweet peas, green beans, potatoes and broccoli. Everything is growing well- although the carrots are much too crowded. That’s what you get when you have two little boy helpers!
Our peach tree is three years old. It did produce sweet peaches last year although they were tiny. We were a bit nervous this year as our tree was in full blossom when frost hit about a month ago. As you can see, the peaches survived! Our only problem is curly leaves. We did not spray our tree with fungicide last Fall and some of the leaves are showing signs of the fungus.
Too our surprise, both of our apple trees have teeny tiny apples forming. We just planted the trees about five weeks ago. We were not expecting any fruit for a year or two. We will see how big they get and if they mature completely- but it is really exciting!
I love this time of year. The planning, planting and hopes of a good harvest. I can’t wait until we can enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of our labor!

I’ve been thinking about starting a garden. Where’d you get your seeds from at such a great price? Any tips for a beginner?

I actually bought the plants already started in a packs of 6 for $2 at my local garden shop. Depending on where you live, most likely it would be best to start with plants instead of seeds at this point. If you live in a colder region, you can start your seeds inside.
The most important thing is your soil. You want your soil to be fertile with plenty of nutrients for your plants. If you don’t have good soil, the best thing to do is to plan on raised beds or a container garden. Many veggies grow great in containers!
The best thing to do is go down to your local garden center and ask what grows best in your area. They will probably give you tips on how to plant too. I really just jumped in and went for it about 4 years ago. We started small but now have a good size garden. I like to try new stuff each year too. It is always trial and error as you never know what the weather will bring. Last summer was so hot and dry which meant poor crops in July/August.
