Garden Update: Green Beans & Peas

We have been picking green beans this week in our garden! We also continue to pick sugar snap peas, herbs and lettuce. I expect to be picking our first yellow squash this week too. Of course just as fast as the veggies are growing, the weeds are growing too! I spent a good amount of time pulling weeds Saturday.

Last week I reported on an invasion of bugs and worms. We used Garden Safe Bt Worm and Caterpillar Killer on the cabbage. It worked beautifully. I haven’t seen a new caterpillar in a few days. I will need to reapply it today due to the rain. Bt is an organic way to control cabbage worms and has no effect on the other good bugs and worms in the garden!

We had a severe thunderstorm on Friday evening that resulted in large hail. I was eager to check the garden Saturday morning to look for damage. Some of the large leaves on the squash plants have holes in them and some of the tomatoes needed to be staked back up. Overall, I think everything survived!

We went to a local farm for blueberry picking. Our own blueberry bushes are not growing that well which is a bummer! We were happy to pick 7 pounds of blueberries at $3 a pound though. I will be making blueberry syrup and jam and of course freezing some whole berries. If you haveĀ  a berry farm locally, I highly suggest you pick your own. It is much cheaper than buying them in the store and they are delectable!

How is your garden growing?
