Freezing Biscuits: Recipe & Tips

Awhile back I purchased the Pillsbury Frozen Biscuits. It occurred to me that I could easily make homemade biscuits and freeze them just as Pillsbury does! It is really not hard to make homemade biscuits but I don’t have a lot of time to whip them up on work nights. It is certainly easy to pull them straight from the freezer and toss them in the oven though!

Biscuits

2 Cups Flour
1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
1/3 Cup Butter
3/4 Cup Milk

Mix together flour, baking powder and salt. Add in butter. I find it easiest to use a pastry blender. Once the butter in incorporated, add in the milk. Stir until mixture is moistened.

Lightly flour a surface and place dough on it. Knead the dough until smooth- about 10 strokes. Roll Dough out to about 1/2″ thickness. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out the circles. This recipe makes about 12 biscuits.

If you are going to freeze the biscuits, stop here. Place the cut out dough onto a baking sheet and freeze. Once frozen, place in a freezer bag.

To bake from frozen- heat oven to 375 degrees. Bake for 15-20 minutes.

To bake when just dough- heat oven to 450 degrees and bake for 10 minutes.

Tips

  • Make a double batch. Freeze some and bake some for dinner!
  • Use your own recipe and try freezing the dough before baking.
  • Try using a whole wheat flour for a healthier biscuit.

What is your favorite thing to make ahead and freeze? Any time saving tips?

  2. I have my own favorite biscuit recipe that is basically the same as this one, so I will have to try freezing them!
I would be more apt to have biscuits for dinner if all I had to do was throw them in the oven.

    • Hi Hannah,
Yes, it is a huge time saver to have biscuit dough ready to go. I hope it works out for you!

I just made these and cut strawberries into them. Do I need to spray my pan?

    • Hi Melanie,
I normally do not spray the pan but I have never made them with strawberries. There should be enough butter in the recipe to make them not stick I would think. Sounds really yummy!
