Who is looking forward to Spring? ME! We have had several weeks of ice and snow. I’m ready to kick winter out of here and move onto Spring! The time change to Daylight Savings Time this Sunday reminds me that Spring will be here soon. Longer days are what we look forward too!
This Sunday, March 8th at 2am make sure you set your clocks ahead an hour! It’s time for “Spring Forward!”
Daylight Saving begins at 2am, when we skip ahead to 3am.
It’s also a good idea to change the batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The recommendation is to change the batteries when the time changes in order to remind you.
Changing the time is tough for our bodies. I notice it takes a week or so for my body to adjust. The kids are no exception! My boys are terrible sleepers-so having an interruption really messes them up.
Tips for helping kids adjust:
To help the kids adjust, I change the clocks on Saturday afternoon. Although it is tempting to put the kids to bed an hour early, most likely that won’t work well. I aim to put them to bed about 15 to 30 minutes early depending on how tired they are.
My boys are naturally early risers so most of the time I do not have to worry about them sleeping in. However, if your child is still sleeping at their normal wake-up time on Sunday morning, wake them instead of letting them sleep in. Letting them sleep in will make it tough for them to go to bed on Sunday night which in most cases is a school night.
As the days get longer, it is more difficult to get my boys to go to bed since it is still light out. Placing dark curtains up in their rooms to block the light seems to help.
I also find that my boys sleep better if they have played hard outside. Longer days means warmer weather and more outside play! Hopefully that means more sleep too!
What are your tips for adjusting to Daylight Saving Time?
