Huckleberries are currently in season in Central Virginia. We are fortunate to have a ton of wild huckleberry bushes in our yard. Most of the time, the critters grab up the huckleberries before we can collect them. However, there seem to be an abundance of berries this year!
Huckleberries look similar to blueberries although they are much small. They taste similar to blueberries and range from sweet to slightly tart. There are different varieties of huckleberries and I’m not sure which type grow in our yard. They grow on a shrub that is low to the ground. Huckleberries have more seeds than blueberries and have a slight crunch to them. They can be used in recipes just like blueberries!
It’s pretty uncommon to find huckleberries in the store since they aren’t commercially produced. Huckleberry bushes grow in acidic soil. The berries are loved by wildlife like birds, squirrels and bears. Yep, bears love ’em!
I haven’t seen as many wild blackberries this year but I’m hoping to find some soon. It’s always a bonus to find free berries growing in your own backyard!
Have you tried huckleberries before?
