Embracing Different Learning Styles

Boys Summer 2013

I have two boys who have completely different learning styles. It was not really noticeable to me until Mr. B started Kindergarten this year. Capt. M has always struggled with reading. He is in second grade and still requires extra help with reading. Mr. B on the other hand, is taking off with reading!

Capt. M gets distracted easily and requires a quite working environment. He is a hands on learner. Doing worksheets bores him and he doesn’t learn much from them.

Mr. B has an amazing memory. We can read a book to him once and he will have it memorized. Since he has such a good memory, reading is coming much easier for him. Mr. B doesn’t get as distracted as Capt. M does. He loves to color and fill out worksheets.

Watching our two boys learn has really taught us to be better at helping them. Since we are learning what style of teaching works best for them, it helps us better assist them. Take some time to get to know what works for your child. Every one of us learns and absorbs information in a different matter. If your child is struggling, maybe they need a different approach to learning.

Just a little food for thought for this Thursday!
