Outdoor Workouts: Brave the Earth’s Elements

With the seasons changing, there is more opportunity to get outside. I (Litsa) love to exercise in fresh air—it is my go-to-gym! Thus I loved the list that Shape Magazine pulled together in response to braving winter weather. I’d even vouch to say that some of these precautions under the elements are great reminders between seasons and/or throughout the seasons. When you’re working out under the elements make sure you are prepped with proper gear/protection:

  • Wear three layers. Start with a sweat-wicking base layer, then put on an insulating fleecy middle layer, and a weatherproof outer layer (like nylon)—-plus a hat & gloves for frigid temperatures. Stash your phone in a pocket—holding it can leech heat from your hand. And remember, you should be chilly at first, or you’ll soon overheat (with too many layers beyond three).
  • Drink more often. Cold dulls your sense of thirst by 40%, increasing your risk for dehydration-induced dizziness & headaches. Bring along a water bottle & sip often.
  • Use extra sunscreen. UV rays reflect off snow/ice—doubling overexposure in winter temps. Spring sunshine is deceiving too—warmer days say sunscreen even if it is cool. SPF sticks are easy to use on the run—reapply as needed not forgetting chapstick.
  • Know how to walk on ice (and/or loose gravel). To avoid wipeouts on snow, trails, loose gravel, etc. take small quick steps, letting your feet land directly beneath your body, not in front of it. Shoes with traction are perfect too—extra gripping is a must for some terrain.
  • Put your scarf to work. Cold air can make lungs ache. Cover your mouth with a scarf if you are moving around again in frigid temperatures.

So with these few tidbits among others you’re already aware of in your personal routines outside, brave the elements of the earth whether alone or with a friend. Don’t let the weather detour you.

Fresh air is available throughout all the seasons. One must be willing to meet in the middle—check the temperatures & prep accordingly!
