After a week of vacation, we ventured to the BIG city one more time to retrieve lost luggage. While we were there, we stopped in at a local restaurant for dinner. I didn’t have any Dining Out Deal knowledge or a deal list with me but I still glanced over the menu’s prices for the best deal! I opted for water with lemon——as I always do. My husband asked for a drink from the bar and sweet tea like he always does. And if one wasn’t enough!?! Yes. I drank three more glasses of water and he drank one more mixed drink——–and then ‘BILL’ arrived!
$18 for two drinks from the bar——-seriously!?! We had a bottle of Vodka in the pantry at home and $8 worth of oranges—-half already juiced and ready to drink!! I didn’t say anything except $18 since I was on vacation for the week and he slaved away at work all week long! He actually deserved a few more drinks but at $9 a piece!?! I really had to reflect on this again tonight.
When we say, we need to tighten up the budget…….I indeed think this is one area we could work on together! He might opt for one drink but not water to replace his tea. It too cost $2.95 to enjoy at the restaurant. If you buy tea by the box to brew fresh at home, you know that one glass at a restaurant is MORE than the entire box at home!
When you’re working on your budget to save money and/or pay off debt—–or increase your savings sometimes it is not the BIG ticket items like the home mortgage that make the difference, it’s the little things like tea and mixed drinks at a restaurant!
Now, I’ve grown up in a restaurant and the family business paid our bills so I’m not saying don’t drink anything but water——–just think before you order! Know the cost of each item so that the final tab doesn’t surprise you or make you want to point your finger at the spouse that doesn’t ask what items cost!
Cheers to drinks that keep the family budget in alignment with what’s been discussed around the kitchen table!
