I don’t often see pineapples go on sale at our local grocery store. Sometimes I’ll locate them as loss leaders but finding them at $0.75 a piece is unheard of! Therefore, when I saw that two pineapples were tagged with manager special stickers, I knew they were for my experimentation with dehydrating fruit with my borrowed dehydrator.
I used a cutting board and knife to cut the pineapples up into chunks. I tossed any brown spots around the edges of the ripened pineapples. I also discarded the pineapple cores (if I were juicing this week, I would have kept them to add to my green juices). Once I had enough pineapple chunks (not too thick), I placed them on the dehydrator trays. Next, I placed the dehydrator setting on 135 degrees and let in run all night to dehydrate the pineapple chunks into fruit bites for the week. The dehydrator ran all night. To remove added moisture from the pineapple, I let the machine run a few added hours. Therefore, it took about 12 to 14 hours to finish dehydrating pineapple.
The best part of this new experiment was the bite sized pieces of pineapple that were as sweet as sugar cubes but super healthy for eating on the go during this busy season in my life! No additives—just pineapple!
