Recess has become almost non-existent in many schools as the academic pressure increases. I fondly remember recess when I was in school. As a kindergartener I couldn’t wait to get outside and play on the equipment. For a few years I lived in Wyoming where we had a lot of snow. I can remember playing on the playground in the snow! As I got older recess became more about the friendship interactions rather than the play equipment.
I am a firm believer that recess is a necessity for kiddos and I am saddened by son’s current kindergarten schedule. He has no morning recess and only a few minutes of outdoor play after lunch. I know that academics are important but I believe kids need a break as well. Their brains actually function better when they have periods of rest or recess.
In the past twenty years, children have lost an average of 8 hours of recess a week.
