Daddy Daycare: Stranger Danger

Sunday night we ended up watching Dateline as a family. Kind of a weird choice for a family show; but it was such an important message. I don’t even know how we started watching the show since Dateline is not on our usual radar. Once we saw the title ‘My Kid Would Never Do That: Stranger Danger‘, we were hooked.

What Dateline did was put kid’s to the test regarding stranger danger. These kids had all been taught by their parents about the danger of being approached by an unknown individual. But would they remember to use what they were taught when they were put to the test?

The kid’s were tempted by ice cream and a tour of an ice cream truck. Dateline did this test with different groups of children- some knew each other and others did not. The results were gut wrenching when every single one chose an ice cream and a tour of the truck. Some hesitated and you could tell they knew it was wrong, but they still gave in to pressure and went. Natalie Morales had her own son tested with the same results. The emotions she displayed when she watched her son give in were so real and raw; I cried right along with her.

Our boys watched the program with us and we spent a great deal of time explaining what was happening. Hubby will continue to reiterate this message in the coming weeks as he cares for our boys.

If you have not watched this Dateline episode yet, I encourage you to do so. Have your children watch it. You don’t have to panic or make your children feel like they should be afraid. We just need to prepare them to the best of our ability.

Hubby is currently a stay at home dad to our two boys. Capt. M is 5 and in 1st grade and Mr. B is 4 and loves staying home with daddy all day. Join us as we chronicle our journey adjusting to daddy daycare.
