Last week I was having a conversation with my co-workers about healthy eating. Several of us are on a mission to decrease the foods with additives and high fructose corn syrup that our families eat. The topic of bread came up with one person trying to get her children to eat whole wheat bread.
I have only served my kids 100% whole wheat bread. I proudly stated that my kids didn’t even know white sliced bread existed.
Until….
The very next day (I am not kidding!), I went to make Capt. M’s lunch. “What is this? Where did this bread come from?”, I stated.
Hubby “It’s bread. I bought it at the store.”
I had sent hubby to the store to buy what I thought was a simple list- milk, bread and coffee-creamer. I failed to mention what type of bread! Even though I have only bought 100% whole wheat bread, hubby never noticed.
After our discussion about why I buy whole wheat bread, Capt. M said “Daddy, I think you better write that down!”
Lesson learned for both of us- I need to be very specific when sending my dear hubby to the store and the kid’s survived easting white bread! Hubby learned about the importance of whole grain and how to read a label!
Hubby is currently a stay at home dad to our two boys. Capt. M is 5 and in Kindergarten and Mr. B is 3 and loves staying home with daddy all day. Join us as we chronicle our journey adjusting to daddy daycare.

My girls were raised on whole wheat bread. As adults they still eat it except for french toast and grilled cheese. I was informed that those two things have to be on white bread or they don’t taste right.
Hi Debbie,
We make french toast and grilled cheese with whole wheat bread. My mom always bought whole wheat too! I am sure french toast might be a bit better with the smooth white bread but I’ll let my boys test that when they are out on their own! Thanks for sharing!
