Are you always forgetting? Did I write a check for soccer registration? What did I do with that Edward Jones check? Gary Small, MD, director of UCLA Longevity Center and author of The Alzheimer’s Prevention Program: Keep Your Brain Healthy for the Rest of Your Life emphasizes a technique to use:
LOOK, SNAP, CONNECT!
LOOK: Focus on what you want to remember. Simply stated: Pay attention to the task at hand.
SNAP: Create a mental snapshot. When there’s a visual, we are likely to remember!
CONNECT: Link up the snapshots. For instance, if you want to drop off the soccer registration paperwork and deposit a check to Edward Jones, visualize a soccer ball being kicked passed the goalie (a winning shot–$$).
Luckily for those of us that use coupons, rebates, shoppers’ tips, blogs, and more to save money, we use this technique: LOOK. SNAP. CONNECT. weekly if not daily. When we see the coupon, we are focused in on the products we use daily and/or for meal planning. As we clip or print the coupon and file it into our coupon binders, we are snapping a mental picture of the product and money savings on our receipt. Next, when we take our shopping list, coupon binder, and ourselves into the store, we link up the snapshots. Our shopping list guides us to the products we need today or this week. The visuals of the coupons we clipped or printed are on our minds too.
When we spot a closeout item, an unadvertised sale, manager special, etc. we are able to visualize the coupon and the savings. Hopefully, with just a flip or two we locate the coupon we need! We are each embracing the perfect techniques—using coupons to save money and Look. Snap. Connect. to keep our brains healthy! Who would have guessed that the two went hand in hand?
You are sharpening your memory! Keep on couponing!
