Country Life: Snakes

It is the season where snakes are a little more active. Since the nights are a bit cooler, snakes are coming out to bask in the sunshine to warm up. Our neighbor recently killed a copperhead snake, which is a prevalent venomous snake here in Central Virginia. I have also heard several stories from friends coming across copperheads in the last few weeks.

Our neighbor brought the dead copperhead over to our house in the bucket of his tractor. We wanted our boys to see what a copperhead looks like. Since the boys often play outdoors, they need to be aware of what these dangerous snakes look like.

We also tell the boys to stay out of the woods and away from the leaf covered areas. The copperheads blend right in with the leaves and are hard to spot.

We haven’t spotted any copperheads on our property yet, although neighbors on each side of us have. Living in the country, we definitely need to be aware! And I HATE snakes! Even though the one pictured was dead, it still gave me the chills.
